Blond or white peat is a relatively lightly decomposed peat resulting from the degradation of moss of the Sphagnum genus, the generic name given to 150 to 250 species of moss which, by extension, are known as bog mosses.
Blond peat is a material very rich in organic matter, with a coarse, light structure and a light brown colour. This type of peat is able to absorb between 10 and 15 times its own weight in water, its pH value is quite acidic (between 3.5 and 4) and it has a total porosity of around 90%.
What is blond peat?
Blond peat, also called high peat or peat moss, forms in areas with a mild climate and abundant rainfall where various species of Sphagnum develop. These species are very difficult to decompose when they die, so they accumulate as a millennia-old plant mantle.
Characteristics of blond peat substrate
It is a relatively acidic substrate due to its low decomposition. Its loose, granular texture provides a suitable medium for the aeration of plant roots. It also has a high degree of water retention that allows watering frequency to be reduced.
What is blond peat used for?
Blond peat can be used as the sole substrate for various acidophilic species, but it is mainly used to improve soils and the substrates of pots and containers. Adding it improves the structure and density of the substrate, providing an aerated medium with a greater capacity to retain water.
Which crops is blond peat ideal for?
As a sole substrate, blond peat is ideal for growing carnivorous plants, which do not need many nutrients and can grow without problems. For the substrates of other species, such as Japanese maples, hydrangeas, azaleas and camellias, among others, it is recommended to create a mix in which blond peat makes up 50% of the total components.
